Access the best training and support on the funding process
Regardless of the size or type of institution, all US-based investigators can benefit from a program unlike anything offered to date.

Developed and led by a former funding agency program manager
Let us walk you through the funding process with our behind-the-scenes perspective.

The best research happens when researchers are supported
We provide the training and support researchers need to make their best ideas fundable and have their greatest impact.

Success in funding is not about writing more proposals
Most researcher training focuses on proposal development, but success in funding starts before and extends beyond that.

Within 18 months of starting the program, 75% of clients have received funding. The average value of a single-investigator award, typically with a duration of 2-5 years, hovers around $350,000. Our homepage provides that exact figure, which is updated periodically.
Because the skills taught through the program support career success more broadly, our clients experience a range of positive outcomes beyond funding. These career-advancing opportunities include being recruited to move to a higher-ranked institution, establishment of collaborations with government scientists and engineers, selection for awards, and access to media opportunities.
I don’t want to complete the program.
If you have tenure, please send Julia an email or schedule a meeting with her through the Contact page. We may be able to support you with preparation of your proposal or with other funding-related tasks through our Concierge Support offering.
If you have not received tenure, we cannot support you with only proposal development and preparation. This is because a proposal is not prepared in isolation. As just one example, you may be planning to prepare a proposal for an opportunity and not have spoken with or gotten feedback from a program officer. In this case, we will support you in making contact and getting feedback as part of the Wise Investigator program.
If we were to work with you on only the proposal, one of two things would happen: (1) We would end up delivering the program materials ad hoc because of the many tasks that surround proposal preparation or (2) if we did not provide this support, we may end up working on a proposal that doesn’t have a good chance of being funded; this is a not a good use of your resources or ours.
If you have a proposal deadline approaching, contact us as soon as possible. We can usually modify the program schedule to meet a proposal deadline. This might mean putting parts of the program on hold until after the deadline. We work fully one-on-one to accommodate your schedule. We are a small, agile team with no middlemen, so we can move quickly. Often, we can start working together the same day you contact us.
You will also receive support, including multiple rounds of feedback and suggested revisions, on one proposal that you will prepare as part of the program. Your institution will still perform all of their usual functions in preparing and submitting your proposal package. See the next question for details.
As part of the program, you will prepare a proposal for a good-fit opportunity. We will help you identify this opportunity if needed. We provide guidance along the entire proposal preparation timeline, from making contact with funders, preparing for meetings with them, preparing and gathering ancillary documents such as letters of support, establishing a timeline for proposal drafting, and iterating through rounds of feedback with your program coach. Finally, our editor will provide English-language editing of the proposal, not just for ‘readability’ but so that your proposal is truly well written. Your institution will create the budget, complete required forms, and submit the proposal for you.
We understand. For this reason, meetings will be scheduled at times that work for you. You will view recorded materials when best fits your schedule. You can take a break from working on assignments or meetings because you are at a conference, wrapping up the semester, managing family responsibilities, or due to other circumstances. You will not be part of a cohort, so you will not get behind or miss information.
Because you are not part of a cohort, we can move more quickly through material that you already have facility with and spend greater time on areas where you need more support. You will never sit through content that is not relevant to your situation.
Further, we have designed the program to be as time-efficient as possible, and we continuously review our programming and procedures to increase efficiency because we understand that your time is your most valuable resource.
Throughout her time at a funding organization, our founder searched for materials like these hoping she could point PIs to something that would serve them. She could not find anything remotely like this material, so she resigned in good standing from a ‘career’ (aka ‘permanent’) position within the federal civil service to develop this program. By offering a standalone program, every PI is empowered to make this investment in themselves regardless of the level of institutional support.
Although our team has extensive experience with SBIR/STTR from inside DOD, we do not provide support for those opportunities. Our focus is on basic research. If you need support with SBIR/STTR, you will be best served to work with someone who specializes in those programs. Contact us if you would like the names and contact information for individuals who can help you.
Julia is also available to lead LinkedIn workshops for small groups of faculty, postdocs and/or students. These 1-2 hour workshops are delivered by video meeting so that participants can update their profiles during the event. The workshop fee depends on the number of participants. Please contact Julia to discuss.
Beyond these, we do not offer talks or deliver workshops for two reasons:
(1) We understand the power of focus and doing one thing really well. Our zone of genius is providing one-on-one support to PIs.
(2) The world has changed a lot in the last five years. Information is more easily available than ever. These days, lack of success is rarely due solely to a shortage of information.
Our speciality is in supporting clients through implementation, along with delivery of information. We don’t believe that one-way delivery of information is the best way to support faculty for a variety of reasons, including information overload and faculty’s many competing responsibilities.
The assertion that workshops just aren’t cutting it is supported by decreasing faculty interest (i.e., low registrations) and an increasing number of no-shows (among registrants) for both in-person events and webinars.
